#6 In Flames – Clayman

 clayman

What would Swedish metal be without Gothenburg’s own In Flames?  Most likely a sadder more mundane version of what it is today.  If we disregard the band’s recent creative decisions I think it is easy to label In Flames as one of the best metal bands to come out of Sweden, if not Europe.  2000’s Clayman is evidence of this and is also what I would consider In Flames’ last great album. While I was listening to Insect Warfare and Weekend Nachos today, I had an uncontrollable urge to listen to Wintersun, and I thought to share this, simple because I absolutely LOVE this band. Listen and read epic lyrics after the jump.

#7 Eluveitie – Slania

 eluveitie_slania

2008 brought from the underground a band that would change the way many people look at metal.  The Swiss band Eluveitie attacked listeners in 2008 with Slania and their mixture of traditional Celtic folk music mixed with some of the most furious Gothenberg-esque melodic death metal to date.  At first it’s understandable that a listener could be confused or taken back by the mixture of the two genres but the listener will also be taken back by how good it starts to sound. I can’t believe I totally forgot to post another one of these, fuck.

Oh well, here’s some folk shit to listen to:

I finally was able to give this new Týr record a decent listen, and I was thoroughly impressed. I might give some full review later, but for now, listen.

Also watch Suidakra after the jump.

#8 Nile – Annihilation of the Wicked

 Nile_-_Annihilation_Of_The_Wicked

Keeping the death metal going, this list moves to one of the heaviest albums ever made: Nile’s 2005 release Annihilation of the Wicked.  This album is ridden with Egyptian chords and imagery as well as crushing guitars (tuned to drop A).  Some riffs on this album would certainly go in my hall of fame and the lyrical content couldn’t be much more metal.  Karl Sanders really out did himself with this album setting the bar for any other death metal to come out since then Continue reading

#9 Decapitated – Winds of Creation

 decapitatedwindsofcreationvo5

Now THIS is what death metal is all about.  Poland’s Decapitated released this masterpiece of metal when they were between the ages of 16 and 20.  If that isn’t an indication of how talented these young men were then I don’t know what is. The sheer brutality and technicality of this album is astonishing but what really separates this band and release from so many others is the groove and rhythm they can create without compromising brutality.  This is also one of Decapitated’s albums with which we are blessed by Witold “Vitek” Kieltyka’s drumming.  R.I.P. Vitek.  Metal will never be the same without you. Continue reading
